RIP: COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli’s Wife Thrown Into Mourning After Losing a Loved One

Mary Kilobi, the wife of COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli, is mourning the death of senior police officer Lazarus Opicho, whom she regarded as a close brother.

Opicho, who served as the Commandant of the Security of Government Buildings and VIP Protection Unit under the Administration Police Service, died at Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi on Monday night, September 28, 2026, following an illness.

During his years in the National Police Service, Opicho occupied several important positions and was entrusted with protecting government installations, senior state officials, VIPs and judicial officers. His responsibilities placed him at the centre of security operations involving some of the country’s most sensitive institutions and prominent personalities.

Before taking charge of the Security of Government Buildings and VIP Protection Unit, Opicho headed the Judiciary Police Unit, where he was responsible for security-related duties within the judicial system.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja joined fellow officers and members of the public in mourning the senior commander. Tributes described Opicho as a committed and principled officer who served with dedication throughout his career.

His death has attracted messages of condolence from different parts of Kenyan society. Kilobi was among those who publicly expressed grief over his passing, reflecting the close relationship they shared.

Lang’ata MP Jalang’o also mourned the senior officer, while friends, colleagues and other Kenyans took to social media to remember Opicho and share their experiences with him.

Several mourners also sent messages of encouragement to Kilobi and Opicho’s family, urging them to remain strong as they come to terms with the loss. Some recalled their encounters with the officer and expressed disbelief over his sudden death.

Throughout his career, Opicho played a significant role in coordinating security for government facilities and individuals requiring specialised protection, working alongside various security agencies and public institutions.

His death has created a sense of loss among colleagues in the police service, friends and relatives who knew him personally.
