Current Situation At Kang’o Ka Jaramogi Ahead Of Ruto’s Commissioning Of Raila’s Mausoleum

President William Ruto is on Wednesday, October 7, expected to lead the official commissioning of the mausoleum of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County.

The ceremony will mark a major milestone in the completion of the memorial site, which is the final resting place of Raila and his father, Kenya’s first Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.

The event has been designated as a restricted state ceremony and will be attended by invited guests, senior government officials, members of the Odinga family and other dignitaries. It will also be conducted with military honours.

Members of the public have been advised not to travel to the mausoleum for Wednesday’s ceremony because of limited space and security arrangements.

Instead, the proceedings will be broadcast live, with public viewing centres established in Bondo and surrounding areas.

Public access to the mausoleum will begin on Thursday, October 8, allowing Kenyans and visitors to tour the site and pay tribute to the late former Prime Minister.

The commissioning comes as the country continues activities under “Mwezi wa Baba”, a period dedicated to remembering Raila’s life and public contribution.

The mausoleum was constructed with the involvement of the Ministry of Defence and is expected to come under the stewardship of the National Museums of Kenya for preservation, documentation and interpretation.

Raila died on October 15, 2025, aged 80, after a long political career that included serving as Kenya’s Prime Minister and opposition leader.

Further memorial activities are planned in Bondo, including a public commemoration on October 15, bringing together family members, leaders, friends and members of the public.

The mausoleum is expected to become an important heritage site where future generations can learn about Raila’s life and his role in Kenya’s political history.
