Rahul Gandhi Says Everyone Involved in ‘Vote Theft’ Will Be Investigated

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said that everyone allegedly involved in “vote theft” would be investigated, while accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat of damaging the country’s democracy.

Gandhi made the remarks after a high-voltage protest near Nirvachan Sadan, where more than 300 Opposition MPs were allegedly stopped by police from marching towards the Election Commission of India (ECI) office.

Gandhi led the MPs, including members of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), in a march from Parliament to Nirvachan Sadan. The protesters sought to meet the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners.

“We wanted to meet the CEC and the Election Commissioners, but we were stopped and prevented from going there,” Gandhi told reporters near the Commission’s office.

After being stopped, Gandhi, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi and other Opposition leaders sat on a dharna inside Akashvani Bhavan, adjacent to the ECI office.

Gandhi alleged that Modi, Shah, Bhagwat and Kumar had undermined democracy through what he described as “vote chori”. He said that the country knew what was happening and asserted that those responsible would not escape scrutiny.

“What has been done to my country is treason, and nobody is going to escape,” Gandhi said.

Questioning why around 300 MPs could not meet the Election Commissioners, he said the representatives of the people had been stopped just about 50 yards from the ECI office.

Earlier, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, speaking during the march, alleged that those who had “schooled” CEC Gyanesh Kumar on “vote theft” were the biggest thieves.

Kharge also accused the Modi government of seeking to undermine the Constitution and said people were increasingly concerned about their votes and freedom.

In a social media post, Kharge said the Election Commission could not stand for “Election Compromised” and asserted that the Opposition would continue to hold the BJP accountable.

The allegations made by the Opposition leaders come amid their broader concerns over the electoral process and alleged irregularities in voter rolls.
