Expect Heavy Morning and Afternoon Rains for the Next 24 Hours if You Live in These Areas

The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast rainfall and strong winds in several parts of the country from 9:00pm on Tuesday, October 6, to 9:00pm on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.

The weather outlook indicates that light to moderate rainfall could be experienced in Mandera, Wajir, Marsabit, Isiolo, Trans Nzoia, Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia, Kisumu, Siaya, Kericho, Kisii, Nakuru, Nyandarua, Meru, Nyeri, Embu, Kirinyaga, Tharaka Nithi, Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi and Lamu.

The department has also warned of strong southerly to southeasterly winds in parts of Turkana, Samburu and Marsabit counties. The winds could exceed 25 knots, equivalent to about 12.5 metres per second.

Along the Coast, Mombasa, Kwale and Kilifi are expected to remain partly cloudy at night, with chances of light showers. Sunny intervals are forecast during the day, although parts of Kilifi and Tana River could receive light afternoon showers. Lamu is expected to record light showers during the day.

In the North Eastern region, Mandera is expected to experience moderate showers and thunderstorms during the forecast period, with temperatures rising to about 35°C. Wajir and Garissa could also receive showers and thunderstorms, while Wajir may experience moderate afternoon rainfall.

Nairobi is expected to begin Wednesday with partly cloudy conditions before becoming cloudy, with chances of light rain in the morning and light showers in the afternoon. Temperatures in the capital are forecast to range from 16°C to 26°C.

Parts of the Rift Valley, including Nakuru and Eldoret, are also expected to experience cloudy conditions with chances of light rainfall. Kisumu and Kakamega are among the western counties that could receive light to moderate rainfall.

The weather department has urged the public to remain cautious in areas likely to receive significant rainfall. People living in places prone to flooding should take precautions, while motorists and pedestrians should exercise care during periods of reduced visibility and wet conditions.

Residents in Turkana, Samburu and Marsabit have also been advised to remain alert because of the forecast strong winds.

The department defines light rainfall as less than 5mm, while moderate rainfall refers to between 5mm and 20mm. The forecast was issued by Acting Kenya Meteorological Department Director Edward Muriuki.
