Death Reported After 33-Seater Matatu Crashes Into Truck on Mombasa Road
At least one person has died and several others sustained injuries following a road accident involving a 33-seater matatu and a truck along Mombasa Road.
The crash happened on Monday, October 5, near Mlolongo, where the matatu reportedly collided with the rear section of a transport truck.
The vehicle involved was an Enabled Shuttle Sacco matatu. Images and footage from the scene showed significant damage on the driver’s side of the 33-seater following the impact.
The collision also caused the truck’s cargo of maize grains to spill onto the road, adding to the disruption on the busy highway.
People who arrived at the scene could be seen trying to assist those affected by the crash as efforts to deal with the aftermath continued. Initial footage indicated that the matatu did not appear to have passengers on board at the time of the accident.
The circumstances surrounding the crash had not been fully established at the time of reporting.
The accident also resulted in a major traffic buildup along the affected section of Mombasa Road. Motorists using the route were advised to consider alternative routes and available diversion points as the wreckage was being cleared.
The latest crash comes amid growing concern over a series of accidents reported along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in recent days.
Last week, 17 people died at the scene of a separate accident at Mlima Kiu in the Salama area of Kilome, while seven others were seriously injured. Most of those killed were women from St Mathias Mulumba Catholic Parish in Mikindani, Mombasa, who were travelling to the Subukia Shrine in Nakuru County for National Prayer Day.
Further crashes were also reported along the Salama-Sultan Hamud section, where two people died in separate incidents occurring close to each other.
The continued accidents have renewed calls for action to improve safety along the busy highway. Among those pushing for faster intervention is Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr., who has called on the government to speed up plans to dual the highway.
The latest Mlolongo collision is likely to add to concerns over safety and congestion on one of the country’s busiest transport corridors.
