Designed with William Sofield of Studio Sofield, the kitchen blends traditional proportions with pared-back, contemporary details. The white cabinetry and pale surfaces keep the room light, but the dark kitchen flooring idea gives them something to work against. It also stops the upper half of the kitchen from feeling too conventional (and uniform), particularly alongside the translucent cabinets.
Black kitchen flooring is certainly an unorthodox choice in a space where pale oak and light stone have become such familiar finishes. But it can also add definition to a white scheme without introducing another color. In their case, the dark timber creates a clear contrast with the white plastered range hood, marble island, and warm metal hardware, giving the room a sense of depth that’s hard to rival.

For anyone who takes their morning coffee or tea seriously, this stainless steel kettle brings a little style to the ritual. Its sleek silhouette looks chic left out on the countertop, while the built-in thermometer makes it easy to get the water temperature just right.
Even practical kitchen essentials can have a place in the overall design scheme, and this black iron paper towel holder proves it. Its simple silhouette and subtle detailing are as stylish as you can hope for in a holder, meaning it’s at the top of our wish list.
This stainless steel cutlery set gives traditional flatware a more contemporary feel, with an exaggerated silhouette and sleek black finish. It’s an easy way to make a table feel more considered, particularly if you like your place settings to have a little more personality.
If you love Kelly and Mark’s floor but want a little more boldness in the everyday, look to stoneware mugs and bowls with sculptural shapes and expressive finishes. These glazed mugs are a great example, bringing plenty of personality to an otherwise practical kitchen essential.
Artisan-made and designed exclusively with Sarah Sherman Samuel, these petite wood bowls bring a warm, natural touch to the kitchen. They’re perfect for everything from olives to dips, adding a thoughtful finishing touch when you’re entertaining.
Bring a little texture and character to the kitchen with this distressed vase. Its understated finish adds just enough visual interest, whether styled in a breakfast nook or given pride of place on a countertop or island.
‘Embracing dark wood flooring in the autumnal months not only lends natural warmth and depth to your home, but it also offers several practical benefits,’ explains Neel Bradham, CEO and flooring expert at Parador. ‘The deep tones create a cozy atmosphere, bringing richness and contrast to a room.’
The high-gloss finish is particularly effective in this kitchen. It catches the light from above, so the dark floor does not make the room feel heavy, while the timber brings warmth to all the hard surfaces around it. The result is a white kitchen that’s unlike any other I’ve written about in the past.
Plus, there’s a practical argument for such dark floors. ‘They are also versatile, fitting seamlessly into modern and traditional schemes alike, and complementing various color palettes,’ Neel adds.
‘Perfect for high-traffic areas, they are particularly low maintenance due to their ability to hide dirt and minor scuffs better than lighter floors. Moreover, the timeless appeal of dark wood ensures your floors will look stunning for years to come.’

For Kelly and Mark, the decision to take the kitchen darker underfoot gives a familiar (but sometimes uninspiring) white scheme a point of difference. It’s a reminder that sometimes the detail that makes a kitchen work is not at eye level at all.
