Just Hours After Launching the Dangote Refinery in Lamu, Ruto Lands in Trouble as New Details Emerg

The debate over fuel prices in Kenya has intensified, with motorists now demanding clear action from President William Ruto’s administration as pressure grows over the cost of petroleum products.

The latest concerns come shortly after the launch of the KSh2.2 trillion Dangote refinery project in Lamu. The Motorists Association of Kenya is calling for a legally binding commitment that the refinery’s benefits will translate into lower fuel prices for consumers. The association has also demanded the publication of agreements and contracts signed between the government and Dangote Group.

Motorists argue that they have a direct stake in the project because fuel prices affect transport costs, businesses and the prices of essential goods across the country. They want the government to explain how the refinery will eventually benefit ordinary Kenyans at the pump.

The demands come as the government continues to defend measures taken to cushion citizens from international fuel shocks. In May, President Ruto said his administration had committed billions of shillings through fuel stabilisation measures and tax relief to reduce the impact of rising global prices.

The issue has gained renewed attention following the commencement of the Lamu refinery project, which is expected to reduce East Africa’s reliance on imported refined petroleum products when completed. The project is scheduled for completion in 2030.

For motorists, however, the key question remains whether the anticipated benefits will eventually be reflected in lower pump prices.

The latest demands therefore place renewed pressure on the government to provide clear answers on fuel pricing, transparency and how ordinary consumers will benefit from the multibillion-shilling refinery investment.
