US Makes Surprise Claim After Ruto and Dangote Launch Dangote Refinery in Lamu

The United States has responded after President William Ruto and Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote broke ground for the proposed Dangote East Africa Petroleum Refinery in Lamu, highlighting its own role in infrastructure development around the area.

The groundbreaking ceremony held on Wednesday, September 30, brought together political leaders, investors and other stakeholders for what was described as a major milestone in Kenya’s industrial development.

However, shortly after the event, the U.S. Embassy in Kenya turned attention to the role of American-supported infrastructure at Manda Bay.

In its message, the United States said Lamu was the place to be as leaders and investors gathered for the groundbreaking of the Dangote East African Refinery.

Washington pointed to U.S.-supported infrastructure at Manda Bay, saying it helped connect Lamu to what it described as a major investment moment for the region.

“Congratulations, Kenya!” the U.S. said, while saluting American and Kenyan forces whose dedication, sacrifice and partnership, according to the statement, continue to strengthen security and open new opportunities for prosperity and economic growth.

The remarks placed the long-standing U.S.-Kenya partnership around Manda Bay into the spotlight as the country begins work on one of the region’s most ambitious energy projects.

The Dangote refinery is an African-led investment spearheaded by Dangote Group. The proposed facility is expected to form part of a wider industrial development in Lamu and is intended to strengthen Kenya’s position in the regional energy and manufacturing sector.

Dangote has previously indicated that American investors will participate in the project while maintaining that the investment remains African-led.

President Ruto and Dangote’s groundbreaking therefore marked the formal beginning of a project whose impact could extend beyond Kenya’s borders, particularly through the supply of petroleum products to markets across East Africa.

The project is also expected to create employment opportunities, support technical skills development and contribute to the development of Lamu as a major economic hub.

For the United States, the groundbreaking provided an opportunity to highlight the connection between its security and infrastructure partnership with Kenya and the growing economic activity in the coastal region.

The U.S. message came as attention now turns to the actual construction of the refinery and whether the ambitious project will proceed according to the timelines announced by its investors.
