Pressure of Success

Pressure of Success

I am writing to draw attention to the growing pressure young people face to succeed academically, professionally and socially. While ambition is important, unrealistic expectations are increasingly turning success into a source of stress.

Young people are often expected to achieve excellent grades, choose prestigious careers, become financially independent and build successful lives within a limited period. Social media intensifies this pressure by constantly exposing them to carefully selected images of other people’s achievements. As a result, many feel they are falling behind, even when they are making genuine progress.

Family and social expectations can also make young people feel that their worth depends on their achievements. This can lead to perfectionism, low self-esteem, emotional exhaustion and fear of disappointing others.

The solution is not to discourage ambition but to develop a healthier understanding of success. Parents and educational institutions should recognise effort, personal growth and well-being alongside grades and achievements. Young people should also be reminded that everyone follows a different timeline and that their worth is not determined by their accomplishments alone.

I hope this issue receives greater attention. A successful society should not only produce high achievers but also support the well-being of its young people.
