GM is reportedly on track to produce just 35,000 copies of America’s most affordable EV for its lone model-year run.

The one-and-done 2027 Chevrolet Bolt is shaping up to be a bit of a unicorn. Reuters is reporting that its limited run will only amount to about 35,000 units when production of the single model year ends in the first quarter of 2028.

But plans for its resurrection were announced before political winds in the U.S. shifted, EV sales slowed, tax incentives were removed, and tariffs were added to imports. GM decided to move production of the Chevrolet Equinox from Mexico to the Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City and also move Buick Envision production from China to the U.S. plant, which meant killing the Bolt to make room.

GM probably thought the Bolt, as the most affordable EV in the U.S., would at least have one strong sales year, but that is not proving to be the case. Reuters cites a United Auto Worker official who said the Kansas plant is on pace to build about 35,000 Bolts by the time production wraps in the spring of next year. GM has only sold 4,224 Bolts in the first half of the year, so it may have a hard time moving 35,000 of them off the lots given how slow they’re selling to this point. The automaker did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the production run.

The 2027 Bolt starts under $29,000. It’s an updated version of the larger Bolt EUV but with a new 65-kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery. To keep costs down, it has a single, front-mounted motor that delivers 210 horsepower and 169 lb-ft of torque and an EPA range of 262 miles.
