Woman who famously went into coma in 2012 at 34 weeks pregnant dies 14 years on without ever waking up

A pregnant woman who fell into a coma and was forced to deliver her son through an emergency C-section has died 14 years after the tragedy.

Heather Brown, of Gladewater, Texas, passed away on September 18 – just days after her son’s birthday, her family announced on Facebook.

She had never woken up from the coma she went into in 2012, when she was 34 weeks pregnant.

Heather had been suffering from seizures brought on from an aneurysm at the time, while her husband, Sean, was serving in Afghanistan, CBS 19 reports.

When she then slipped into a coma, Sean raced home to be with his wife and son, John, who was born on September 15, 2012, weighing just four pounds and six ounces.

Sean has remained by his wife’s side ever since, and updated the public about her recovery efforts on the Bringing Home the Browns Facebook page.

Over the years, Sean shared how he was able to bring Heather home in July 2013 and how she spoke for the first time in nearly a year in September 2014.

But in a post on Wednesday, the heartbroken father-of-one announced that Heather had passed away.

‘Thank you all that supported and prayed for us during this journey,’ he wrote.

Sean and Heather had met on a blind date, and the two quickly became inseparable, the loving husband told PEOPLE in 2015.

‘We would stay up until the wee hours talking, and about a month later, we moved in with each other,’ he recounted. ‘We got married the following year, I guess she was willing to put up with me for the rest of her life.’

They soon decided they wanted to start a family.

‘I could tell she was going to be a great mom,’ Sean said. ‘She was a natural with kids.’

But the couple was originally told Heather was infertile, so when they found out that she was pregnant in 2012 ‘it didn’t sink in at first.’

Still, Sean said Heather couldn’t sit still – even when she was told she had high blood pressure.

By 2015, however, she was only able to move her fingers, blink her eyes to yes-or-no questions and whisper a few words.

‘She once said my name and John’s name,’ Sean recounted. ‘I never realized that I had an Achilles’ heel until she wasn’t here.

‘I hurt for her that she has missed out on everything,’ he said at the time, noting that all Heather ever wanted was to have a family and be a mother.

Charity Robinson, the friend who set them up on their blind date, also called Heather ‘the most nurturing woman you could ever meet.

‘So the fact that she can’t wipe away John’s tears or give him a kiss is so heartbreaking,’ she said.

A memorial service is scheduled for October 10.
