Today’s Headlines: Tinubu Lands in Lagos as European Vacation Ends; RMD Celebrates Joke Silva at 65

President Bola Tinubu has returned to Nigeria after spending a month in Europe. He left the country on August 30 for a three-week vacation but extended his stay by several days, prompting opposition parties to question his prolonged absence and demand information about his whereabouts.

Tinubu arrived at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos at about 6pm on Tuesday. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said the President chose to return through Lagos to honour the memory of Chief MKO Abiola, whom he described as a martyr of Nigeria’s democratic struggle.

Veteran actor Richard Mofe-Damijo, popularly known as RMD, has celebrated actress and director Joke Silva as she turned 65, praising her longstanding contributions to Nollywood and the Nigerian creative industry. He described Silva as his younger sister and reflected on their friendship and professional relationship spanning more than 40 years.

RMD also acknowledged Silva’s grief following the death of her husband, veteran actor Olu Jacobs, who died on September 16 at 84. He praised her dedication to her family, craft and country, while noting that her influence on the entertainment industry and the people she has impacted over the years is immeasurable.

Residents of Osogbo, Osun State, looted a warehouse linked to Global Food Initiative on Tuesday after investors reportedly failed to recover their funds from the food investment scheme. The incident occurred after aggrieved investors returned to the premises, where Amotekun operatives had been deployed to maintain order, before hoodlums allegedly broke into the warehouse during heavy rainfall.

The crowd carted away rice, vegetable oil, spaghetti, semovita and other food items despite police firing shots into the air to disperse them. Some hoodlums also allegedly threatened investors with axes and cutlasses, forcing them to surrender items they had retrieved. The warehouse was eventually emptied, while police intervention reportedly prevented further escalation.

Guinea-Bissau defeated Nigeria 3-0 in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying Group L match at the 24 de Setembro National Stadium in Bissau on Tuesday. Franculino Djú opened the scoring in the 15th minute, while Mama Baldé doubled the hosts’ lead in the 65th minute before Álvaro Djaló sealed the victory in stoppage time.
