Skeem Saam pupil Mosebjadi finds herself caught up in complicated feelings for her teacher.

Actress Zizo Sobutyu says bringing the controversial storyline to life hasn’t been easy.

The 20-year-old star, who plays Mosebjadi, has watched her character transform from the insecure girl viewers first met into a more confident young woman who’s no longer afraid of making her own decisions.

“She’s grown a lot. The Mosebjadi we first met was quite insecure and unsure of herself, and now she’s more confident and willing to make her own decisions,” she said.

But there’s a catch. Confidence doesn’t always mean making the right choices.

“Being confident doesn’t mean you’re always going to make the right choices. Sometimes, you have to make mistakes in order to learn, and Mosebjadi is definitely learning some things the hard way,” she said.

The actress said she had to put her own feelings aside when preparing for scenes involving Mosebjadi’s feelings for someone in a position of authority.

“I had to separate Zizo from Mosebjadi. I can’t sit there judging her while playing her, because then emotions won’t feel real,” she said.

Instead, she tried to understand what was going on in the character’s head.

“I had to understand why she feels the way she does and what she’s looking for emotionally.

“For Mosebjadi, these feelings are real, although she might not fully understand what they mean or where they could lead,” she said.

Zizo believes Mosebjadi is still figuring herself out.

“She’s at that stage where you feel like you know yourself and you know what you want, but you’re also still learning,” she said.

The storyline has also forced Zizo to think about the importance of confidence and belonging among young women.

“Mosebjadi has taught me that confidence isn’t something you wake up with one day. It’s something you build slowly,” she said.

And viewers have certainly had plenty to say.

“Sometimes, I need to put my phone down because people are serious about Mosebjadi,” said Zizo.

As for what lies ahead, she’s keeping her lips sealed but warns that Mosebjadi should watch her step.

“Let’s just say… Mosebjadi needs to think twice.”

If Zizo could give her character one piece of advice?

“Girl… THINK! Don’t lose yourself because you want someone’s attention or validation. You’ve worked so hard to become this confident girl, so don’t throw all of that away now,” she said.
