Six Clubs That Could Benefit if Manchester City Are Stripped of Trophies

Six football clubs could potentially benefit from Manchester City’s financial breaches if the Premier League decides to strip the club of titles won during the affected seasons.

An independent commission found Manchester City guilty of breaching financial regulations over nine seasons, from 2009/10 to 2017/18. The findings covered financial reporting, spending regulations and the club’s failure to cooperate with the Premier League investigation.

However, no trophies have been stripped, and City have the right to appeal the verdict. A separate hearing will determine the sanctions the club could face.

Manchester United could potentially benefit from two Premier League titles under a retrospective redistribution scenario.

United finished second in the 2011/12 season after losing the title to City on goal difference. Sergio Aguero’s dramatic stoppage-time goal against Queens Park Rangers secured City’s championship.

The Red Devils also finished second in 2017/18, when City became the first Premier League team to reach 100 points.

Liverpool could potentially gain two honours. Brendan Rodgers’ side finished two points behind City in the 2013/14 Premier League campaign. Liverpool also lost the 2016 League Cup final to City on penalties.

Arsenal are among the clubs that could benefit after losing the 2018 League Cup final 3-0 to Guardiola’s team at Wembley.

Sunderland could also be considered for the 2014 League Cup, having lost 3-1 to City in the final.

Stoke City lost the 2011 FA Cup final 1-0 to City, with Yaya Toure scoring the decisive goal.

Chelsea could potentially benefit from the 2012 Community Shield, which City won 3-2 at Villa Park.

Despite the possibilities, the Premier League has no established precedent for awarding titles retrospectively to runners-up. Reports have also indicated limited appetite within the competition for such a move.

Meanwhile, Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham could explore compensation claims over alleged financial losses linked to City’s breaches. However, any club pursuing damages would need to demonstrate that it suffered losses directly caused by the conduct.

Manchester City remain the official holders of the trophies, and any changes will depend on the sanctions imposed, possible appeals and decisions on the status of the honours.
