NUP Deputy President Muwanga Kivumbi granted bail

Share on Twitter National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy President for the Buganda region, Muwanga Kivumbi, has been granted bail by the Butambala Chief Magistrate’s Court.

Kivumbi was re-arrested in July 2026, just days after he had been granted bail by the International Crimes Division of the High Court in a terrorism case.

The prosecution alleges that on 9 July 2026, at Bugoye Village, Gombe Ward, Gombe Town Council in Butambala District, Kivumbi, while addressing a public gathering, “unlawfully incited members of the public to commit acts of violence against government officials and unlawfully overthrow the Government of the Republic of Uganda by urging them to support his plan to wage war against it and seize power.”

The charges stem from a speech Kivumbi made outside his home in Butambala shortly after he was released on bail by the International Crimes Division of the High Court. Hours later, he was arrested by unidentified security operatives and remained in detention for more than two weeks.

Kivumbi resurfaced at Nateete Police Station two weeks later before being transferred to Butambala for arraignment.

He was charged with incitement to violence and managing an unlawful society. Kivumbi denied both charges and was remanded to Kitalya Government Prison, where he remained until today, when he was granted bail.
