“Kwame, Don’t Mind The Talkatives, Continue To Build” — Asantehene Tells Minister Ghanaians React

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has encouraged Roads and Highways Minister Kwame Governs Agbodza to remain focused on delivering infrastructure projects and not allow criticism to distract him from his responsibilities.

The remarks came during an engagement at the Manhyia Palace, where Agbodza and a government delegation briefed the Asantehene on major road projects, including plans for the proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway. Reports from the meeting indicate that Otumfuo welcomed the development plans while stressing the importance of completing projects within the agreed timelines.

The Asantehene also called for attention to the road leading to Sewua Hospital, noting that improved access could help the facility become fully operational and reduce pressure on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

Agbodza used the meeting to provide updates on several infrastructure initiatives. He told Otumfuo that the government had cleared more than $25 million owed to the contractor working on the Suame Interchange, with the payment expected to facilitate the resumption and acceleration of construction.

The government also outlined preparations for the Accra-Kumasi Expressway, including plans for land-clearing activities along sections of the proposed route. The project is intended to improve connectivity between Ghana’s two largest cities and reduce travel times along the corridor.

Otumfuo’s intervention has attracted public attention because of his influential position as the Asantehene. While traditional leaders are generally expected to avoid partisan political involvement, his comments in this instance were centred largely on development, project implementation and the need for government officials to deliver tangible results.

The response to his remarks has nevertheless generated different interpretations. Supporters of Agbodza and the government’s infrastructure programme may view the Asantehene’s comments as encouragement for the minister to maintain his focus on development. Others may question whether public comments from a prominent traditional authority could be interpreted politically.

Beyond those differing views, the substance of the engagement centred on infrastructure delivery and accountability. Otumfuo urged government officials to demonstrate commitment, ensure projects are properly executed and avoid unnecessary delays.

The Roads Minister now faces the task of translating the various commitments into completed projects. With major initiatives such as the Accra-Kumasi Expressway and Suame Interchange receiving attention, progress on the ground will ultimately provide the clearest measure of the government’s infrastructure programme.
