Khune Hails ‘Great’ Mofokeng After Bafana Star’s Stunning Brace Against Eritrea

Relebohile Mofokeng delivered a performance to remember as Bafana Bafana powered to a commanding 5-0 victory over Eritrea in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying Group D clash at Cairo’s Al Salam Stadium on Wednesday night.

The 21-year-old attacker scored twice in the first half, opening his international account and immediately underlining why he is regarded as one of South Africa’s most exciting young talents. His display also earned praise from former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper and Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune.

Speaking on SABC 2, Khune focused on the quality of Mofokeng’s movement and finishing, particularly his opening goal, which came after a well-weighted pass from Oswin Appollis.

“What a great run by Mofokeng. But what I like about it firstly is the first touch, the run, and the execution of the pass from Appollis. Then what a great finish by Rele,” Khune said.

Mofokeng had already threatened the Eritrean defence before breaking the deadlock, striking the post early in the contest. He eventually made the breakthrough in the 19th minute after Appollis picked him out inside the area, with the youngster showing composure to find the bottom corner.

His second goal arrived just before half-time, giving Bafana a comfortable 2-0 advantage at the break. The brace marked Mofokeng’s first goals for the senior national team and took his international tally to five goals in 24 appearances, according to iDiski Times.

Bafana continued their dominance after the interval, with Sphephelo Sithole adding a third before Iqraam Rayners extended the lead. Substitute Luther Singh completed the rout in stoppage time, sealing a five-goal victory for Pitso Mosimane’s side.

The result gives South Africa six points from their opening two Group D matches following their 2-1 victory over Guinea. Reuters reported that Bafana have therefore made a perfect start under Mosimane in their bid to qualify for the 2027 AFCON finals.

For Mofokeng, the night represented another important step in his rapid development. His recent form for Belgian club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, combined with his first Bafana goals, has placed the young attacker firmly in the spotlight.

Khune’s praise reflects the growing attention around Mofokeng, whose combination of close control, movement and finishing provided one of the major talking points from Bafana’s emphatic victory.
