Deanna Karl, 32-year-old from Amsterdam, was taken into custody at about 3 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, 2026, on two open bench warrants tied to separate petit larceny cases in Amsterdam, according to Sheriff Jeffery T. Smith and members of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

Karl was transported to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Glen to be held as a pre-arraignment detainee. Authorities said that before she entered, she had a body scan search that indicated an internal anomaly in her pelvic region, suspected to be contraband drug paraphernalia.

Investigators said Karl voluntarily removed the contraband from her and then immediately destroyed it. The item was determined to be a glass smoking pipe.

In addition to the petit larceny warrants, Karl was charged with second-degree promoting prison contraband, and tampering with physical evidence. She was also charged with two counts of police officer executing a bench warrant.

Karl was later transported to Amsterdam Town Court, where she was arraigned on all charges and remanded to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility without bail, authorities said. She is scheduled to appear in both Amsterdam and Glen town courts for further proceedings at a later date.
