The planned coronation of Prince Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I as the new King of Tooro hangs in the balance after a last-minute petition was filed in the Fort Portal High Court seeking to halt tomorrow’s installation ceremony.

Two concerned Batooro, Derick Alitugabira and Juliet Kangume, alongside Walezi Wa Katiba—an organization dedicated to promoting the rule of law and good governance—have applied for an interim court order to restrain the event scheduled for Tuesday, September 29, 2026. The applicants, through their legal counsel from Messrs Thomas and Michael Advocates, are urging the court to suspend all coronation proceedings pending the resolution of their main suit challenging the legitimacy of Prince Nyabongo’s selection.According to court filings, the petitioners argue that the selection process directly contradicted the explicit wishes of the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. They contend that King Oyo had left a written Will specifying that his son should succeed him on the throne or, in his son’s absence, his cousin.

His sureties were ordered to execute non-cash bonds of Shs2m each
