September is fashion’s great reset, with new collections filling catwalks and stores, knitwear dug out of drawers and summer dresses giving way to sharper tailoring and heavier fabrics. That mood spills into our make-up bags and bathroom cabinets with new brands, products and ingredients. So just as the new-season collections beckon us back into boots and blazers, here are the beauty buys to snap up.

Hypochlorous acid has been used in wound care for decades; it’s basically a gentle disinfectant that your white blood cells produce to fight bacteria and reduce inflammation. A rush of sprays containing it has hit the market to cleanse skin, treat breakouts and calm redness without stripping or aggravating the skin barrier, as new research cites a decrease in both itch and inflammation. A spritz on clean dry skin staves off spots, heals blemishes and repairs damage. And it’s not just for your face: bacne, eczema and psoriasis, begone.

Cool US brand Prequel has launched in the UK, bringing its hero hypochlorous spray to our shores – and record-breaking sales at Space NK, while Elf Skin has a supremely affordable option.

Aside from irritating your lungs, aerosol sprays release volatile organic compounds that contribute to air pollution and global warming, and complicate recycling due to pressurised metal containers and propellants.

Living Proof, whose dry shampoo has achieved best dry shampoo status by selling one every ten seconds, has launched an aerosol-free version. Styling brand Color Wow has also brought out an aerosol-free hairspray for flexible hold without the fumes. Proof that a product can deliver without the nasty packaging.

It’s official, incense is back. No longer just the domain of crystal lovers, its most recent iteration is a chic alternative to a scented candle. Cult fragrance brand Le Labo has an incense line for some of its most popular fragrances. London-based Droplet was launched in May, also collaborating with actor Seth Rogen’s lifestyle brand Houseplant. Its low-smoke incense cones come in a range of fragrances, and include a glass holder to keep your tabletop safe.

Powder cleansers have been used in Asia for centuries, and cult product Dermalogica Microfoliant launched far back in 2001. Now they’re having a resurgence. From the founders of iS Clinical, Icon Skincare’s new cleansing powder turns into a creamy foam when mixed with water, gently polishing to refine skin texture without scrubbing. Loopha, a bodycare brand from Canadian company Deciem (responsible for The Ordinary), has a powder wash that saves on any luggage spills.

‘Lip blur’ may sound like bait for the trout-pout crowd, but it works wonders on a more mature mouth. Blurring products by L’Oréal Paris and Refy deliver a creamy matt texture from an easy-to-scribble domed applicator. They diffuse colour along the lip line for a soft-focus effect, and hide a multitude of sins. No bleeding into fine lines, no uneven colour and they plump lips to their former glory.
