RIP: Last Painful Note Eric Omondi Wrote to His Wife Before He Was Found Dead in Kajiado

Details have emerged about the final note Eric Omondi wrote to his wife while in a Kitengela police station cell in Kajiado County before he died.

Eric, a Kenyan and American citizen and father of two, allegedly died in custody after being arrested in the evening. His wife, Georginah Mwawasi, said he managed to text her at around 9pm.

He told her the group had been arrested over claims of loitering.

That message is now the last communication the family received from him.

Georginah said Eric and his friends were out for the evening when officers in civilian clothes stopped them.

Two of his friends were handcuffed, and the whole group was then loaded onto a lorry and driven to the station.

She said Eric told her they had done nothing wrong and that he did not understand why he was being taken in.

The family says the arrest came without warning or good reason. An autopsy has since established the official cause of death, but relatives insist that police negligence played a part in what happened.

They have asked the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, known as IPOA, to open a full investigation.

IPOA is the civilian body that looks into police misconduct, including deaths of people held in custody. Such cases have drawn public anger in Kenya before and often lead to calls for officers to be held accountable.

Beyond grief and the demand for answers, Georginah faces one of the hardest tasks any parent can face, which is telling her children that their father is gone.

She said her eldest child already knows the truth, but the youngest has not been told. She explained that she must find a way to break the news because the little one was very attached to her father.

Her words show a home still trying to absorb the shock.

The widow is caught between her own mourning and the need to protect her youngest child from a painful reality she is not yet ready to hear.

For now, the family waits for answers, holding on to a final text message that marked the end of an ordinary evening that turned into a tragedy.
