Njeri Maina Says Ruto Sent Her KSh500,000 Weekly After 2022 UDA Win: “I Asked Him to Hold My Hand”

Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina has claimed that President William Ruto financially supported her political campaigns after she won the 2022 UDA party nominations.

Speaking during an interview on the Iko Nini podcast published on Sunday, September 27, Maina said she received about KSh500,000 every week to support voter mobilisation and campaign activities.

According to Maina, the money was reportedly channelled through an individual identified as Rono. She said she had told Ruto that she lacked sufficient funds and asked him to support her political journey.

“After I won the UDA nominations, the current president started financially supporting me. I think it was KSh500,000 every Monday for mobilising votes and campaigns,” she said.

Maina said her entry into politics was unexpected. In 2021, she printed a political poster intended to unsettle a rival politician. The poster went viral on Facebook, exposing her to a wider audience and eventually encouraging her to enter politics.

She later joined UDA and offered legal assistance to party members and bloggers who had been arrested. During the nominations, she said she also received support from Senator Kamau Murango and an MP identified as Mathenge.

However, Maina said her relationship with Ruto later deteriorated over disagreements concerning the Judiciary and other issues.

She said she voted against the 2024 Finance Bill and described the deaths of young protesters during the demonstrations as a major turning point in her political relationship with the administration.

Maina is currently associated with the Democracy for the Citizens Party and has emerged as a vocal critic of Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election.
