Museveni Hails Sarah Kiyimba as Brovad Group Expands With Mount Elgon Hotel Reopening in Mbale

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has hailed Hajjat Sarah Kiyimba for her hard work and commitment to business as he officially opened the renovated Mount Elgon Hotel in Mbale City, praising the investment as an example of the growing role of hospitality in Uganda’s economy.

Museveni, who was hosted by Kiyimba during his visit to the hotel on Sunday, described her as a “workaholic”, recognising her longstanding involvement in business and the expansion of the Brovad Group’s hospitality investments.

The President’s remarks came as the Kiyimba family unveiled the newly renovated Mount Elgon Hotel, a historic landmark in Mbale that has been restored while retaining its architectural heritage and fitted with modern hospitality facilities.

In a statement shared after the opening, Museveni said the restoration had successfully preserved the hotel’s historical character while introducing facilities suited to modern hospitality.

“This morning, I was in Mbale City, where I officially opened the renovated Mount Elgon Hotel. The restoration has preserved this historic landmark’s architectural heritage while introducing modern hospitality facilities,” Museveni said.

He added that the hospitality industry was an important component of Uganda’s service sector because of its contribution to employment, business activity and economic growth.

“The hospitality industry is an important part of the service sector, creating jobs, supporting businesses and contributing to economic growth,” he said.

Museveni’s recognition of Kiyimba adds another dimension to the reopening, highlighting not only the physical transformation of the hotel but also the business journey behind the investment.

Kiyimba, who heads the Brovad Hotels business, has built a reputation for being closely involved in the family’s hospitality enterprises. A 2020 profile by The Observer described her as a hands-on businesswoman who spent long hours overseeing operations at Hotel Brovad in Masaka and personally followed up on contractors, employees and guests.

Her son, Rashid Kiyimba, is the proprietor of Mount Elgon Hotel & Spa and has overseen the expansion of the Mbale property as part of the family’s wider hospitality investments.

Ahead of the reopening, Rashid told Daily Monitor that the hotel had expanded its rooms and meeting facilities to serve business travellers, conference guests and Ugandans visiting eastern Uganda.

The renovated hotel now presents a significantly expanded hospitality offering while retaining its identity as one of Mbale’s historic establishments. The hotel says the building dates back to the 1950s and that its 2026 restoration has preserved the original landmark while adding modern accommodation and leisure facilities. It currently lists 65 rooms, including three executive suites, alongside restaurants, bars, a swimming pool and spa facilities.

For the Kiyimba family, the reopening marked a significant milestone in the continued expansion of the Brovad Group’s hospitality interests.

Celebrating the development, Sarah Kiyimba took to X to congratulate the Brovad Group and thank God for the achievement.

“Congratulations to the Brovad Group. Thank you, Lord, for this milestone,” she posted.

Her reaction followed Museveni’s recognition of her work ethic and the family’s investment in restoring the historic property and positioning it for a new phase of growth.

The Mount Elgon Hotel reopening also comes as Mbale and the wider Elgon region seek to strengthen their tourism and conference economy.

Mbale hosted the national World Tourism Day celebrations on Sunday, placing renewed attention on the region’s tourism attractions, accommodation facilities and wider visitor economy.

The reopening of Mount Elgon Hotel gives the Brovad Group a strengthened hospitality presence in eastern Uganda while adding modern accommodation and conference capacity to a city positioned as a gateway to the Mount Elgon tourism circuit.
