Kalonzo Drops Bombshell Hours After Gachagua’s Claim That Opposition Leader Will Leave Before 2027

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has challenged President William Ruto to face him in a democratic contest ahead of the 2027 General Election, following Rigathi Gachagua’s prediction that one opposition presidential hopeful will abandon the race.

Speaking on Sunday, September 27, at an Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) service in Bondo, Siaya County, Kalonzo urged Ruto to stop targeting former President Uhuru Kenyatta and instead focus on him.

The former Vice President called on the Head of State to embrace a fair political contest, insisting that Kenya needed genuine democracy.

“I want to advise my brother William Ruto because, at the end of the day, he is a brother in Christ, or so I believe. Now leave Uhuru and take on Kalonzo, but do it in a decent and democratic manner,” Kalonzo said.

He maintained that both sides would have to reflect on their conduct and the country’s future, regardless of who emerged victorious.

Kalonzo also said there was no shortcut to achieving a truly democratic Kenya, urging political leaders to put the interests of the country first.

His remarks came hours after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua predicted that opposition leaders would eventually settle on one presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking in Dallas, Texas, Gachagua claimed that one of the presidential hopefuls would voluntarily withdraw from the race, leaving a single candidate to represent the opposition.

He further predicted that the eventual opposition flagbearer would secure more than 75 per cent of the votes cast in the election.

Gachagua, who leads the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), maintained that he would remain part of the political arrangement and would not be the one to leave.

The former Deputy President also addressed concerns about possible election interference in 2027, assuring Kenyans in the diaspora that nobody could steal a general election.

He, however, recalled alleged election irregularities involving the transportation of ballot boxes and manipulation of results during past elections.

Kalonzo’s latest remarks come amid ongoing discussions among opposition leaders over a possible joint presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election.
