Influencer Sara Gilson’s Cause of Death Revealed 2 Months After Estranged Husband Killed Her in Murder-Suicide

Sara Gilson’s cause of death had been determined, more than two months after the influencer was shot and killed by her estranged husband, Jeremiah “Shawn” Duffey, in July.

Gilson’s cause of death was listed as “gunshot wound to the head,” according to Oklahoma Chief Medical Examiner documents obtained by PEOPLE on Tuesday, Sept. 29. The manner of death was listed as homicide.

Duffey’s death was ruled a suicide and a toxicology analysis was negative, according to the medical examiner.

The Owasso Police Department (OPD) previously confirmed to PEOPLE that Gilson, 43, was shot by Duffey, 48, who then fatally shot himself. Police discovered both individuals dead with gunshot wounds in Gilson’s home in Owasso, Okla., at around 11:15 p.m. local time on July 23.

A child living at the home made the 911 call that alerted authorities. Gilson was heard “screaming and crying” by a 911 dispatcher before police found her and estranged husband Jeremiah “Shawn” Duffey’s bodies in her Oklahoma home, per dispatch audio obtained by PEOPLE.

“I’m trying to reach him back, but I could hear a female in the background screaming and crying. Some sort of loud bang in the background,” a 911 dispatcher can be heard telling first responders on the audio recording, referring to the caller who reported the eventual murder-suicide.

Moments later, a dispatcher mentioned a “male that we were looking for a few weeks ago after he got caught kissing a juvenile” and referred to “a gun.” By around 11:18 p.m., authorities communicated to dispatchers that they had arrived at the home, where Gilson and Duffey were discovered dead with gunshot wounds. They were later identified as the victims by a family member.

Weeks before her death, Gilson accused Duffey of being a pedophile and filed an emergency protective order against him after police found he “had inappropriately touched a juvenile female” player on the basketball team he coached, per the Owasso Police Department (OPD) in a statement issued to PEOPLE.

On June 10, Gilson filed for an emergency protective order against Duffey. He was immediately ordered out of their home and told to stay 100 yards away from Gilson, court records show. By June 23, the protective order was extended through Aug. 24.

The same day Gilson filed the emergency protective order in June, a different woman filed a separate protective order against Duffey on behalf of her minor daughter — a 15-year-old girl who played on the youth basketball team he coached — per court records viewed by PEOPLE.

According to the OPD’s media release, the teen and her mother gave a sex crime report to authorities after Duffey’s inappropriate conduct with the minor was “witnessed by another team coach,” who intervened and told the juvenile’s parent. “The suspect in this incident fled the scene and had not been seen by Owasso Police since,” Capt. Boatman added of Duffey in the statement.

“Similar conduct by this coach towards this particular juvenile player was reported to have occurred over an extended period of time, in multiple law enforcement jurisdictions, across multiple states prior to this incident,” the OPD statement read, noting that neither Duffey nor the basketball team are associated with the Owasso Public School system; the team was renting the school facility while classes were not in session.

The OPD confirmed that his alleged crime — “Lewd Molestation of a Minor” — had been turned over to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for review before he murdered Gilson and killed himself.

Less than two weeks before Gilson’s death, she posted a TikTok calling her soon-to-be ex-husband a “pedophile.”

“Preparing for when Netflix drops a documentary about my soon to be ex husband who I just found out is a pedophile,” Gilson wrote with her video, referencing an ongoing TikTok trend, in which users pretend to sit down for an interview with Netflix for a documentary.

“I wish I was joking,” she captioned the social media post.
