Four Madhya Pradesh Sites Added to UNESCO Tentative List, State’s Total Rises to 19

Four more historical sites in Madhya Pradesh have been added to UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage Sites, taking the state’s total to 19 and marking another step towards international recognition of its rich cultural heritage.

The newly included sites are the Bagh Caves in Dhar, Ginnaurgarh Fort in the Ratapani region, the Bateshwar-Padavali-Kakramath temple complex in Morena, and the Udayagiri Caves in Vidisha.

Inclusion in UNESCO’s Tentative List is the first formal step towards possible inscription on the World Heritage List. Sites must undergo detailed evaluation and other procedures before UNESCO makes a final decision on their nomination.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav congratulated the people of the state on the development. In a post on X, he said the additions provide an opportunity to enhance global recognition of the state’s historical heritage. He also emphasised the importance of collective efforts to conserve and promote these cultural treasures.

Fifteen historical and natural sites from Madhya Pradesh were already on UNESCO’s Tentative List. These include Gwalior Fort, Bhojeshwar Mahadev Temple, the rock art sites of the Chambal Valley, Khuni Bhandara, the Gond monuments of Ramnagar, the Dhamnar group, Bhedaghat-Lametaghat, Satpura Tiger Reserve, the historic ensemble of Orchha, and the monuments of Mandu, among others.

The Bagh Caves in Dhar comprise nine Buddhist rock-cut caves developed between the 4th and 6th centuries. Their murals, particularly those in Cave No. 4, are notable for the insights they provide into the social life and culture of the period.

Ginnaurgarh Fort, located in the Ratapani region, is an example of Gond architecture and traditional water management. Its key features include natural defences formed by the surrounding hilly terrain, fortifications and stepwells.

The Bateshwar-Padavali-Kakramath temple complex in Morena showcases a range of architectural styles from temples built between the 8th and 11th centuries. The Bateshwar temple cluster, intricate carvings at Padavali and distinctive design of Kakramath contribute to the complex’s historical significance.

The Udayagiri Caves in Vidisha served as an important centre of religious and political expression during the Gupta period. The site consists of 20 rock-cut caves, with the celebrated Varaha statue among its most prominent features.

The latest additions bring further international attention to Madhya Pradesh’s historical and architectural heritage, adding to the state’s portfolio of sites being considered for potential World Heritage status.
