Deputies say South Carolina man killed grandmother, stole $3,500 from her Cash App

A 21-year-old South Carolina man is facing murder and other charges in connection with the shooting death of his 75-year-old grandmother.

Deputies with the Florence County Sheriff's Office found Lorestine Hunter dead inside her home on Sharon Road while conducting a welfare check Sept. 23. The Florence County coroner later identified her.

Investigators obtained warrants for Hunter’s arrest Sept. 24.

Deputies located Hunter on Monday, but he fled in a vehicle when they attempted to arrest him, the sheriff’s office said.

The chase continued north on Interstate 95 before deputies disabled Hunter’s vehicle in Dillon County, just south of the North Carolina state line.

Hunter then attempted to run away but was apprehended by a sheriff’s office police dog and taken into custody, according to the release.

Hunter, of Dillon, is charged with murder, burglary, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, financial card theft, financial identity fraud and financial transaction card fraud.

He was being held at the Florence County Detention Center pending a bond hearing.
