Daniya Kanwal gains international spotlight as emerging Pakistani hip hop artist

Karachi-born rapper, dancer, and choreographer Daniya Kanwal is gaining international recognition after being selected as Pakistan’s representative for Spotify’s EQUAL programme for the third quarter of 2026.

Kanwal was featured on a digital billboard in New York City’s Times Square on September 26, marking another milestone in her rapidly developing music career. Her growing audience has also translated into a sharp rise in streaming figures over the past year, with her listeners increasing by more than 3,470% and streams climbing by over 6,920%.

Her music combines hip hop with South Asian influences while exploring subjects including identity, womanhood and the experiences of young women in society. Her track “Mic Check”, from her seven-track debut album Kanwal, is among the releases that have contributed to her growing profile.

Kanwal’s career began in hip hop dance before she moved further into music. Performing as B-Girl Destiny, she became Pakistan’s first female national champion at the country’s inaugural international breaking championship in 2022.

She also featured on the HBL PSL 11 anthem “Khelenge Beat Pe” alongside Atif Aslam, the Sabri Sisters and Aima Baig, and was among the song’s lyricists. The track has become her most-streamed song, followed by “Bin Ranjha”, “Jihadi Aurat” and “Meri Jaan”.

A significant portion of Kanwal’s Spotify audience is between the ages of 18 and 34, while her music has also attracted listeners outside Pakistan. The United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and the United Arab Emirates are among the countries where she has recorded substantial streams.

Reflecting on her selection for the EQUAL programme, Kanwal said the initiative represented a space where women could openly address subjects that are often avoided. She said she was grateful for the opportunity to represent that spirit through her music and to be associated with other women musicians.

Spotify’s Artist & Label Partnerships Manager for Pakistan and UAE, Rutaba Yaqub, described Kanwal as an emerging artist bringing her personal experiences and South Asian identity into Pakistan’s hip hop scene.

Kanwal’s transition from competitive breaking to recording music has positioned her as one of the emerging female voices in Pakistan’s contemporary hip hop scene.
