Assistant Director II Receives GH₵4,200 Monthly, Yet Someone Receives Same In A Day Meeting – Obenfo

The National Executive Director of the Ghana National Council of Private Schools, Obenfo Nana Kwasi Gyetuah, has criticised what he described as a significant disparity between public-sector salaries and meeting allowances amid the ongoing teachers’ strike.

Speaking to Onua TV on September 28, 2026, Mr Gyetuah argued that it was unfair for an Assistant Director II within the Ghana Education Service to earn about GH₵4,200 for an entire month while another person could receive the same amount as an allowance for attending a single meeting.

He said the situation raises questions about how public funds are allocated and could have implications for morale within the education sector. Teachers and other education workers are expected to handle responsibilities including lesson preparation, classroom instruction, marking and student mentoring, making remuneration a major factor in attracting and retaining personnel.

Mr Gyetuah also raised concerns about the management of outstanding payments owed to teachers. He claimed that proper records of unpaid salaries and allowances were not available in some cases, making it difficult for affected workers to establish what they are owed and pursue payment.

His comments come as teacher unions continue their industrial action over outstanding financial obligations. The unions met with officials of the Ministry of Education on September 28 in an effort to find a resolution, although teachers have maintained that they expect their outstanding payments to be addressed before returning to classrooms.

The dispute has raised wider concerns about teacher welfare, payroll administration and the potential impact of prolonged industrial action on education. Continued disruptions could affect lesson schedules and learning outcomes, particularly for pupils preparing for important examinations.

Mr Gyetuah’s remarks have therefore added to calls for clearer payment records, timely settlement of legitimate arrears and remuneration structures that adequately reflect the responsibilities of education workers.
