Elderly Cocoa Farmer Left Heartbroken as Illegal Miners Allegedly Invade Her Farm in Konongo

An elderly cocoa farmer in Konongo, within the Asante Akim Central Municipality of the Ashanti Region, has reportedly been left distressed after some individuals allegedly entered her farm and began engaging in illegal mining activities.

The incident has reportedly raised concerns over the growing threat illegal mining poses to cocoa farms and the livelihoods of farmers who depend on their lands for survival.

According to information surrounding the incident, the individuals allegedly took over a portion of the woman’s cocoa farm and commenced mining activities without her consent.

Her son, who was reportedly alarmed by the development, confronted the individuals at the farm and demanded to know who had authorised them to enter the property.

The confrontation allegedly escalated after a man popularly known as Okoto reportedly gathered some associates and assaulted the farmer’s son.

The alleged attack has added to the family’s distress, with concerns about the safety of the elderly farmer and her relatives.

The development has also renewed calls for stronger action against illegal mining, particularly in farming communities where the practice can destroy cocoa trees, degrade fertile land and threaten the livelihoods of local farmers.

Residents and affected farmers are expected to seek appropriate intervention to protect the farmland and address the allegations surrounding the incident.
