The new bakkie brand taking South Africa by storm – TopAuto

Only 18 months after its official market entry in South Africa, Chinese bakkie builder Foton has managed to not only introduce three distinct passenger bakkies, but also to surpass 5,000 total units sold.

This rapid growth has seen the brand establish itself among the top ten commercial vehicle brands in South Africa, selling 112 units in March and finishing in ninth.

Among passenger and light commercial vehicle (LCV) sales, Foton managed 492 units, to take the brand past the 5,000 unit milestone.

Foton’s dual focus on the LCV and medium commercial vehicle (MCV) segments has allowed the brand to establish itself locally, not only as an importer, but now also as a local manufacturer.

“This milestone reflects the pace at which Foton is establishing itself in South Africa,” said Marius Smal, CEO of Foton South Africa.

“Reaching over 5,000 vehicles on the road in a relatively short period is a strong indicator of the market’s response to our product offering, as well as the strength of our dealer network and support structures.”

Its focus on both LCVs and MCVs – which are popular segments in South Africa – and bakkies in particular, Foton has managed to cement its presence in the local market.

Offering a range of vehicles from entry-level workhorses for small business owners, all the way to 4×4 bakkies, and even electric fleet solutions, the brand has branched out rapidly in less than two years.

“Our approach has been clear: to offer vehicles that deliver on durability, value and real-world usability,” explained Smal.

“This milestone is not only about growth in numbers, but about building long-term trust with South African customers.”

Foton has also credited its extensive network of 63 dealerships for their key role in supporting the brand’s rapid local expansion.

More to come

With the brand hoping to carry its momentum forward and strengthen its long-term position in South Africa, Foton’s operations at its local vehicle assembly plant in Gqeberha have already begun.

The assembly plant represents not only Foton’s first manufacturing base outside of China, but also symbolises its next phase of international growth.

With the facility, Foton hopes to enhance its supply efficiency, support localisation of car manufacturing, and contribute to job creation and supplier development within the South African automotive sector.

“The start of local assembly marks a major step forward for the brand,” noted Smal.

“It allows us to respond more effectively to local market demand, while contributing to South Africa’s broader automotive manufacturing ecosystem.”

As part of its commitment to continuing this expansion, and maintaining momentum in the local market, Foton is looking at strengthening its range of bakkies and commercial vehicles.

The brand also believes it will cement its place as a sustainable presence in South Africa’s market by expanding its dealer network, and offering strong after-sales support.

As Foton aims to scale its local operations and investment, it sees the 5,000-unit milestone as an indicator that it is becoming an increasingly relevant player in the local bakkie market.

“Foton is not emerging, it’s accelerating,” concluded Smal.
