Public Interest Advocate and teacher, Mr. Philip Danso Appiagyei, has cautioned that the escalating tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran in the Middle East could have adverse consequences for African economies, particularly Ghana.
Speaking on Cup of Tea on Kumasi-based Ultimate FM, hosted by McCe, Mr. Danso Appiagyei stated that although the immediate impact of the conflict may not appear severe, the long-term economic effects could be significant — especially in the area of fuel prices.
According to him, heightened tensions surrounding Iran and reported disruptions to major oil shipping routes threaten the smooth transportation of nearly 20 percent of the world’s oil supply from the Gulf region.
He explained that any interruption in this critical corridor could drive global crude oil prices upward, with a direct ripple effect on fuel prices in Ghana and across the African continent.
Drawing comparisons to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia–Ukraine war, he recalled how global crises previously placed enormous strain on Ghana’s economy, contributing to inflation peaking at 54 percent and triggering widespread hardship for citizens.
Mr. Danso Appiagyei therefore urged global leaders to prioritize diplomatic engagement and peaceful resolution to prevent further economic distress in vulnerable economies.
He also advised the Government of Ghana to strengthen strategic fuel reserves as a safeguard against potential supply shocks, rather than politicizing the matter.
Additionally, he raised concerns about a possible freeze or reduction in foreign aid to African nations. He argued that as major global powers redirect financial resources toward military spending, development assistance to countries like Ghana could decline significantly.
He further emphasized that in the event of rising global oil prices, government authorities must communicate transparently with citizens about the causes of price hikes to prevent public frustration, misinformation, and potential unrest in market centers.
Mr. Danso Appiagyei concluded by calling for transparency, preparedness, and responsible leadership in navigating the economic uncertainties arising from ongoing global conflicts.
