Ghana govment don ask Ukraine authorities to release two Ghanaians wey dey in captivity as prisoners of war for dia.

Di two be part of thousands of pipo wey be prisoners of war for both Ukraine and Russia since dia fight start for February 2022.

Authorities for di two kontris don capture soldiers and civilians during di war wey dem detain dem since.

United Nations human rights monitoring mission for Ukraine (HRMMU) find say Ukraine authorities bin dey “torture prisoners of war” afta dem capture dem.

Dem also find wetin dem describe as “serious violation of international humanitarian law by Russian authorities and torture of Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilian detainees.”

Amnesty International don confam also say dem speak to some prisoners of war for both kontris wey di victims share tori of torture and abuse.

“Torture bin dey happun for complete isolation from di outside world; di victims dey at di mercy of di pipo wey capture dem for survival,” Amnesty International secretary general Agnes Callamard tok inside one report in March 2025.

Dis prisoners no get contact wit dia families or oda pipo outside dia detention facilities.

She add say dis be policy by di two kontris wey dey against international law.

Ghana foreign minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa tok say govment dey appeal for di release of di Ghanaians afta im meet Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“Our meeting be about di appeal on humanitarian grounds for di release of two of our citizens wey dem hold as prisoners of war for Ukraine,” di minister write on top im social media page.

Di minister add say “our bilateral tok also chook mouth on how di two kontris fit deal wit di threat by trafficking networks wey dey lure vulnerable youth from Africa to fight for di ongoing war.”

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa say im dey “optimistic say di tok-tok go dey successful., sake of di life of every Ghanaian dey important to di govment.”

Di two Ghanaian prisoners of war for Ukraine dey ‘alive and healthy’

Di minister tok say Ukraine authorities allow am to visit di two prisoners for dia detention centre.

“I fit confam say our citizens dey alive, dem dey okay. Dia rights under international law dey commendably respected by Ukraine authorities,” Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa explain.

Di foreign minister say im dey tank Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy and dia foreign minister Andrii Sybiha say dem grant am di permission to see di Ghanaians “inside di fortified camp”.

“Dis meeting dey give me vim say Ukraine go gree wit our appeal and negotiation to release dem.”

According to di minister, dis two prisoners of war don confam say dem go wish to become advocates against illegal networks wey dey lure young pipo from Africa to fight for di war.

“Di two citizens say dem dey willing to give dia life to educate Africans wey be vulnerable about how to avoid dis kind tin.”
