The Minority caucus in Parliament has expressed deep dissatisfaction with the recent urgent recall of the House, labelling it as both unnecessary and a wasteful expenditure of resources.
This view was made by the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, who criticised the recall, arguing that it constituted an imprudent use of taxpayers’ money, especially given the limited outcomes of the session.
The parliamentary recall, which spanned two days, was convened to address a list of 11 items scheduled for discussion. However, only two of these items were addressed during the sitting at the Accra Conference Centre.
Dr. Forson pointed out that the limited scope of the discussions and the meagre results achieved during the recall did not justify the costs and resources expended to bring Members of Parliament back to the House.
He contended that the recall lacked the urgency or significance that would necessitate such an extraordinary measure, particularly when the nation was grappling with more pressing financial challenges.
“Mr. Speaker, I want to say that there was no way the business we have done so far should have warranted such a recall. We were recalled to tackle tax exemptions and loans. Right Honourable Speaker, one of it [the loans] has been approved.
“Mr. Speaker, our concern remains with the tax assumptions. We strongly believe that these giveaways should be curtailed. We strongly believe that these giveaways of tax exemptions are unwarranted.
“We believe that at a time that the country is bleeding, Ghana should not be giving such giveaways to crony businesses.”
