Ato Forson’s acquittal: AG can do whatever pleases him

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it remains unfazed about the recent appeal filed by the Office of the Attorney General in the ambulance procurement case.

This follows the Court of Appeal’s decision on Tuesday, July 30, to acquit and discharge Minority Leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson and the third accused, Richard Jakpa, in the case.

The Attorney General’s Office filed an appeal Thursday, August 8, arguing that the court’s majority decision misdirected itself in applying the standard of proof required to determine whether a case had been made for the accused to answer.

The prosecution is asking the Supreme Court to thus set aside the acquittal and discharge and order the accused to continue with their defence.

In response to this development, the NDC’s Head of Legal Affairs, Edudzie Tamakloe, expressed confidence in the party’s preparedness for any legal battles ahead.

“Godfred Yeboah Dame, as the Attorney General of the Republic, on July 31, gave the indication that he was going to appeal the decision. That is solely within his right to do. We have no doubt at all in our minds that the innocence of Dr Cassiel Ato Forson will forever be vindicated. It matters not whichever panel, whatever it is, Ato Forson has always demonstrated his readiness to answer to whatever charges.

“In fact, you will note that even while the appeal that was decided was pending, we went ahead and opened our defence, then called our witnesses, then closed our defence and that is how confident we are in our innocence. So, Godfred Yeboah Dame can do whatever pleases him,” he said.
