NEWMONT GHANA Gold Limited, has trained 162 youth in its host communities to enhance their employable skills to work in the extractive industry.
They included 72 persons who graduated in Welding and Fabrication, scaffolding and carpentry while 42 were also matriculated to begin training in carpentry and masonry.
The artisanal graduates were trained from local and national training institutions including Yamfo Vocational and Training School.
Speaking at a short joint graduation and matriculation ceremony at Techire in Tano North Municipality of Ahafo Region witnessed by chiefs and people from the community, Project Manager of Newmont Africa Ahafo Project, Andries Havenga noted that the skills acquired will enhance their employability at local, national and international levels because the certificate is recognized internationally.
‘We established the construction worker training programme to train local artisans from our host communities to enhance their capacity to meet required standards and approved certifications required for delivering work for us and future work opportunities within the extractive Industry,
It is our hope that when the Ahafo North Project begins full scale operation, we will source skills from these graduates who are well trained and equipped to support the company,” he said.
The Ahafo Regional Minister, George Yaw Boakye, who was the guest speaker thanked the company for the opportunity given to the youth.
He pleaded with those who will have the opportunity to work with the company to use dialogue to settle industrial strife whenever it occurs to maintain industrial peace.
The Sustainability & External Relations manager of Newmont Ghana Gold Limited of Ahafo North Project, Joseph Danso on his part said the company has given artisanal skills to many youth in all ten host communities.
He implored the trainees to impress the company with hard work, truthfulness and diligence since it is a great opportunity.
