Ex-govs/deputies can go with official vehicles – Osun Speaker counters Adeleke

Speaker of Osun House of Assembly, Mr Timothy Owoeye, on Wednesday said the state law empowers governors, their deputies and some top public officials to go with their official vehicles when they retire from office.

In response to Governor Ademola Adeleke’s request that the former governor Gboyega Oyetola, his deputy, cabinet members, and some individuals in public office who held positions during the previous administration return the official vehicles in their possession, Owoeye made this statement during plenary.

The State Public Office Holders (Payment of Pension and Severance Packages) Bill 2018, which was enacted into law in 2019, allows former governors to leave office with their official vehicles, according to the speaker.

However, he extended an invitation to Mr. Teslim Igbalaye, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), and Mr. Kasim Akinleye, State Chief of Staff, to attend for a comprehensive discussion on the subject.

“I want to ask the SSG and Chief of Staff to allow us to talk about this issue in its entirety.

I won’t say anything more until I meet with the SSG and Chief of Staff, except from the fact that we have a Public Office Holders (Payment of Pension and Severance Packages) Law that was passed in 2019. According to Vanguard.

“Neither of them are being called to appear before the Assembly; rather, they are being asked to allow us to meet for discussion.

In addition, the speaker stated that a committee of the Assembly made up of 10 members and empowered under Sections 128 and 129 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Constitution (1999) to investigate the state’s entire debt profile .

He said that certain provisions of the constitution permit the Assembly to continue its investigation into the state’s actual debt profile, which it began on December 21, 2022.
