After many months of negotiations the M23 rebels have finally agreed to surrender Key regions that they had occupied during their war with the Congolese government. The rebels on Friday officially agreed to withdraw their forces from Kibumba, one of the regions that have been occupying and handed it over to the EACRF. The region is situated 20km from the city of Goma.
As they were handing over the region the rebels through their leader said that it was a sign of goodwill made in the name of peace. Evacuating from the region was one of the agreements of the Luanda agreement made a few weeks ago. The conference was attended by different heads of State among them former president Uhuru Kenyatta.
“We hope that the Government of Kinshasa will seize this opportunity with both hands and also work to establish peace in our country,” Lawrence Kanyuka, the political spokesperson of the movement said in a statement.
The decision by M23 to withdraw from Kibumba came hours after the UN said that Rwanda was involved in the supporting the rebels by supplying them with arms. The Rwandan government however dismissed these claims saying they were supporting the Congolese government in stopping the rebels.
