Ghana’s Long-Awaited Project Is Finally Completed

Ghana’s development is expanding exponentially. Constructing a 37.6 million euro water supply project to tackle the region’s long-standing problem of water shortage which has long plagued the region. As a country split into 16 whole regions keeping track of the needs of some of these regions may be difficult. Especially if they are not vastly populated like the capital and a few others. However, regardless of the region, the basic needs of the people will have to be taken care of to the best of the country’s ability. In today’s article, I’ll be telling you about the newly constructed 37.6 million euro water supply project in the Upper East Region of Ghana that is going to look to put a stop to this long-standing problem.

In the northern part of Ghana, there has been a nagging issue of an insufficient supply of water to the people. A lot of citizens would have to walk long distances to access good water sources. This had been the reality of most of those citizens for a good while now. A study conducted in 2020 in the northern part of Ghana showed that 40 percent of the people lacked access to portable clean drinking water leaving them very susceptible to diseases. Measures were needed to be put in place as soon as possible to keep the situation.

In January 2018, the government of Ghana through the Ministry of Finance secured funding to the tune of 37 million euros. Consisting of a 12 million euro grant from the Netherlands government and 25 million euro from ING Bank based in the Netherlands to implement a massive water supply project that the country has been planning for a while now. In the northern part of the country, the Netherlands has long been providing grants to the nation of Ghana to battle the water supply crisis. With funding for the project secured work began immediately on this mega water supply project. The Upper East Region was identified as the perfect spot for such a project.

The project was awarded to Denys NV a Belgian-based contractor experienced in carrying out complex construction projects. Denys NV in cooperation with the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources structured the projects into two phases. To increase the design horizon from 2030 to 2040 to make adequate provision for future demand in line with the policy of constructing water projects taking into consideration future population growth.

The project which was completed earlier this year was commissioned on the 5th of August 2022 by the president of Ghana Nana Akufo Addo. The project will provide the people of Bolgatanga, Navrango, Paga, and its environments with 20 500 cubic meters of water per day. Which is approximately 4.5 million of water per day. A three-fold increase from the 1.5 million gallons a day originally available to the region. Apart from Bolgatanga Navrango and Paga communities such as Zuarungu, Bongo and the like are also set to benefit from the projects. 347 446 people in total will be served with safe potable water. The president addressed the gathering present at the commissioning of the projects. He told the gathering that the execution and completion of the Upper East water supply project fall in line with the program of governments to achieve the target sets by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal seek of ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all accordingly.

He then said that with the availability of portable water in this area investors will take the advantage of government’s flagship programs such as one District One Factory to establish small and medium-scale enterprises. To create employment for young people to stimulate the growth and development of the domestic economy. He added this mega project will no doubt solve one of the most long-standing problems facing the Upper East Region and with plans for further expansion to match the growth of the population. We can confidently see this problem has been kept for good.
