Akufo Addo Sacks Minister: A Political Gimmick?

It hasn’t been long since Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo sacked Charles Adu Boahen, the minister of state for finance, following allegations of impropriety that were circulated by renowned Ghanaian investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas. Well, I am not sure that this comes as a shocking turn of events for any Ghanaian. I just have some questions running through my mind and I’m sure I’m not alone in this.

First, it is worth noting that the president took this action after being made privy to the allegations against Adu Boahen in the documentary “Galamsey Economy” which was to be on Monday, November 14, 2022. The president’s actions denote that he seems unaware that his ministers and other close associates take money from supposed investors before paving way for a meeting with either him or the vice president. Come to think of it, are both the president and vice president unaware of this? This seems similar to the former GFA boss who claimed to have had the president in his pocket.

Truly, the president and the vice president may be unaware that their names are being used in such an unhealthy manner. But on second thought, have they been unaware all this while but haven’t really minded because it hadn’t come to the public light? Is the minister’s sacking just a political gimmick to position himself as one with high moral standards? Well, in the face of no evidence against the president and his vice president themselves, it is quite inappropriate to draw conclusions.

More so, it is quite laughable that even in the face of hard evidence, Mr. Adu Boahen denies such allegations. As a Ghanaian man would exclaim, “ei! human beings can lie o!” It seems the politician in Africa will always be a typical “politician”. With the matter referred to the special prosecutor, we live to see how things unfold.

But such regular discoveries of bribery and corruption are indeed shameful. Ghanaians are gradually wising up. I think it’s about time the politician also did. What do you also think?
