For the Portugal guys, their boss Fernando Santos announced his 26-man squad while looking forward to matches in Group H against Ghana, Uruguay and South Korea, starting from 24 November.

Cristiano Ronaldo will be playing at his fifth World Cup, an achievement matched by only four players previously. He also looks forward to becoming the first player to score at five separate World Cups.

For Bruno Fernandes, this is his third senior tournament with Portugal, having appeared at the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020.

Dalot has been selected for a first World Cup after a great start to the season with United. The 23-year-old, who has played six times for Portugal since making his debut at the Euros, has started every one of Erik ten Hag’s 19 competitive games in charge at Old Trafford.

Fernandes, meanwhile, remains a pivotal figure for the Reds and has also played an important part in helping Portugal qualify for this tournament.

For Maguire and Rashford, this is their second World Cup. Both Maguire and Rashford were selected by Southgate for the Mundial in Russia four years ago, while Shaw was the youngest player at the 2014 tournament, aged just 18.

Nine Reds are now confirmed as going to the tournament, with Brazil best represented by Alex Telles, Antony, Casemiro and Fred are in Tite’s squad.

Christian Eriksen has been picked as part of Denmark’s provisional list, while Raphael Varane has made it into Didier Deschamps’ France selection, despite missing recent weeks through injury.

The inclusion of Maguire, Rashford and Shaw for England maintains a long run of United players representing the Three Lions at the planet’s most prestigious international tournament.

England have now qualified for 16 editions of the competition, choosing at least one Red in every single squad.
