Bernice Awenlie Abu-Baidoo was at Okaishie this morning to assess the impact the intended closure of shops by GUTA is having on business.
Here’s what she discovered:
Two wholesalers received messages from their suppliers last night, indicating an increase in the price of goods. They say it’s a weekly affair. Also, a supplier is hoarding his goods due to the unstable cedi-to-dollar ratio.
Retailers who had been standing in front of a shop for close to two hours left because attendants were adjusting the prices of goods. She was told as much as 20 cedis is added anytime there’s an increase.
Those she spoke to feel helpless. They support GUTA’s decision to close shops in protest of current economic conditions.
Bottom line is, things are increasing too often than usual. If nothing is done urgently to address the situation, many people will be out of business and many people won’t be able to afford basic things.
