Liz Truss, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, has resigned. Her resignation is effective immediately.

She announced her resignation as Conservative Party leader at No.10 Downing Street in London and stated she had informed King Charles.

Continuing, she said, “I recognize… given the reality I cannot fulfill the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.”

Prime Minister Liz Truss has held office for the least amount of time (45 days) of any British leader.

Truss’s influence was severely weakened by her government’s many policy reversals, which contributed to the economic crisis in Britain that precipitated her departure.

It was on her 45th day in office, which was Thursday, that she made the statement.

Outside Downing Street, Truss said that she would resign as party leader once her replacement was selected because she had failed to fulfill the promise she had made to voters.

George Canning, who served as prime minister for 119 days until his untimely death in 1827, is second on the list of shortest-serving PMs.
