Hearts Of Oak ‘Booted’ Out Of CAF Confederations Cup Despite 1-0 Win Over AS Bamako of Mali

Ghana’s remaining representative in Africa have been knocked out of the CAF Confederations Cup. Kotoko were the first team from Ghana to be kicked out of Africa. The porcupine Warriors were eliminated by Kadiogo of Burkina Faso in the CAF Champions League. With Kotoko winning away at Burkina Faso, many expected another win in Ghana but this didn’t happen as the Ghanaian side was kicked out on penalties in Kumasi.

All hope shifted to Hearts of Oak to lift the flag of Ghana but this didn’t materialize as they have been eliminated as well from Africa. Hearts played the first leg of the Confederations Cup in Mali where they were thrashed by 3 unanswered goals. Some were optimistic that Hearts could overturn the results in Accra. They felt Hearts could repeat what they did to St. George of Ethiopia years ago.

Today’s game started with Hearts of Oak dominating proceedings. However, none of the chances that came their way were utilized as Junior Kaaba and Barnie missed a number of chances. The second half returned with the fans cheering the team hoping a goal will come but the tall Malian defenders held on to stop all the attacks from the Hearts attackers. With time running out Hearts mounted more pressure and eventually Caleb Amankwah got a late goal but this wasn’t enough.

The game ended 1-0. This meant that the 2 legs ended 3-1 in favour of AS Bamako. The Ghanaian side will now have to focus on the league, a competition that they are even struggling to contain. Ghanaian clubs for some years now have flopped in continental competitions. Whereas some blame the clubs, some also believe it is the fault of the Ghana Football Association who have failed to develop and transform the league
