Akufo-Addo And Wontumi Storm Asantehene’s Palace With Simple Message On Galamsey

The issue of galamsey has become the most talked about issue in the past few months. Illegal mining has always been an issue but in the past few months many have spoken against destruction it is causing to the environment. President Akufo-Addo upon assuming office in 2017 promised to put his presidency on the line just to stop galamsey. It’s been close to 6 years but very little has been achieved.

Today, Sunday, October 16, 2022, President Akufo-Addo started his Ashanti Regional tour of the country and one of the most anticipated places many expected him to be was the palace of the Asantehene. The Asantehene has been one of the vocal personalities against galamsey. Despite his strong stand on the issue, he has been unable to achieve much and his land has seen so much destruction.

In attendance with the President was Bernard Antwi Boasiko, popularly called Chairman Wontumi, Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Bonsu, Kosua Frimpong, the NPP General Secretary, Nana Boakye among other dignitaries.

In addressing the Asantehene, President Akufo-Addo renewed his zeal to bring an end to galamsey. According to the president his government has been one of the vilified in the 4th Republic but he is working to make all things work. On the issue of galamsey, Akufo-Addo called for the support of the chiefs and the Asantehene himself so that galamsey is defeated by the time he leaves office.

“I am not corrupt. I came to stop galamsey. We will stop galamsey. I heard some days ago you spoke against galamsey. It is the right thing. We all need to speak against galamsey so that we put an end to that illegality” Akufo-Addo said.

It can be recalled that few days ago, the Asantehene boldly stated that the attempt by government appointees and leadership to stop galamsey is full of lies. He noted that despite the assurances he consistently receives, he still knows that there is no fight because most of those who make those assurances are deeply involved in galamsey. This is not the first time Akufo-Addo is making a promise to the Asantehene. Time will tell if it will be achieved
