Northern Region Tops Number Of Females Who Have Never Attended School Before – GSS

According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC), 79,733 females in Ghana aged 12 to 17 have been married or have cohabited with a man.

Of those, 25,999 of them are junior high school-aged girls (12 to 14 years).

With rates, more than twice the national average (4.0%), the Northeast (13.0%), Savanna (10.9%), and Northern (10.6%) have the highest percentage of females ever in a union.

Despite the fact that universal basic education is free and required, about 244,731 females between the ages of 6 and 14 have never attended any kind of formal schooling.

The Northern Region, where three out of every ten of these girls live, has the largest proportion of females who have never attended school (73,516), followed by the Savanna (27,930) and North East (22,857).

Savanna leads all areas with 40.2% of females who do not presently attend school (or have never attended or have attended in the past); it is followed by the North East Region (29.3%) and the Northern Region (28.5%).

7.8% of females in the country, or 285,271 girls between the ages of 6 and 14, are not in school.

Girls aged 6 to 14 who are not in school make up 75.8% of the population and live in rural regions.

In addition, 49.7% of the 99,150 females under 15 who are employed in economic activity are not in school.

The three regions with the largest percentage of females working are the Northern (22,647), Oti (17,694), and North East (9,153), where 50.9% of girls are employed.

On October 11, 2022, the International Day of the Girl Child, the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) released these figures based on the 2021 Population and Housing Census dataset.

The purpose is to draw attention to issues early marriage, limited access to chances for education, and other issues that impede young girls from realizing their full potential.
