Documents Reveals Name Of NDC Lawyer Who ‘Defended’ Illegal Miners In Court Last Year

Illegal mining popularly referred to as galamsey has become a topic for discussions for the past few months and many have raised questions as to whether the government headed by Akufo-Addo is committed to fight it. In 2017 President Akufo-Addo promised to put his presidency on the line and 5 years later it seems the situation is worse.

Interestingly, no local kingpin has been arrested yet for galamsey raising more critical issues about the state security apparatus. Only a Chinese woman, Aisha Huang and some accomplices have been arrested and they are facing prosecution. Aside that all locals arrested are not major stakeholders. Well, Aisha Huang is being defended by Nkrabea Effah Dartey, a former MP for Berekum and a member of the NPP. On the other side the immediate former Chairman of the NPP, Freddie Blay is also defending the accomplices of Aisha Huang.

Asaase FM, a pro-NPP media house has dropped evidence to show that former NDC MP for Akwatia, Baba Jamal was once in court to defend some 5 Chinese men who had been arraigned before court for galamsey. Baba Jamal had filed for bail for his 5 clients and his signature was cleared attached to the bail request. The NDC stalwart managed to secure bail for the 5 Chinese men in August 2021.

This makes one wonder as to the rationale behind this new revelation. Is it the case that the ruling NPP is using Asaase FM owned by Gabby Otchere Darko to equalize for the NDC attack on the NPP for defending galamsey? President Akufo-Addo has been criticized for lacking the guts to deal with members of his own party who are into galamsey. The NDC have noted with concern how the ruling government has deployed people to defend galamsey victims. According to the biggest opposition this doesn’t augur well for the country.
