Health Titbits On Covid-19 ; Number of Deaths, Symptoms and Others

Coronavirus disease is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. Covid-19 is caused by one virus, called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 or SARS-COV 2.

According to Dr. Nicola Williams, the outbreak of the covid- 19 pandemic involving a novel pathogen has exposed gaps in the knowledge about detecting, managing, treating, and preventing infectious diseases. In Ghana, the Ghana Health Service and Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research have been helpful with information on the covid -19 pandemic.

Did you know that, per world statistics, as of October 2022, more than a 622million people have been infected by the coronavirus disease and 6.59 million have died worldwide?

In Ghana, 170,000 cases have been recorded and 1459 have lost their lives due to the infectious disease.

Covid 19 affects different people in different ways. Most infected people will develop mild to moderate illness and recover without hospitalization.

The most common symptoms of covid 19 include fever, cough, tiredness, and loss of taste and smell.

Less common symptoms include sore throat, headache, aches, and pains, diarrhea, a rash on skin or discoloration of figures or toes, and red or irritated eyes.

Serious symptoms include difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, loss of speech, mobility or confusion, and chest pain.

It is good to know that persons with covid-19 must wear a mask or keep a distance from others.

People with mild symptoms who are otherwise healthy should manage their symptoms at home. On average, it takes 5 to 6 days from when someone is infected with the virus for symptoms to show but it can take up to 14 days.

The virus can spread from an infected person’s mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing, or breath. These particles range from larger respiratory droplets to smaller aerosols.

You can be infected by breathing in the virus if you are near someone who has covid-19 or by touching a contaminated surface, eyes, nose, or mouth.

Kindly seek immediate medical attention if you have serious symptoms.
