Free SHS: Government negotiating with IMF to avoid a possible withdrawal of policy – Osafo-Maafo

The President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and his New Patriotic Party (NPP) have already taken steps to secure financial support from International Monetary Fund (IMF). This decision came as a result of the economic hardship in the country and the continuous depreciation of the cedis against the dollar. However, the opposition party (NDC) has spoken against the decision of the ruling party to go to the IMF for financial on the basis that the policy will restrict and prevent the youths from getting jobs in the government sector.

There is an option that if the Free SHS is abolished, it even safe the country better than going to the IMF. The Senior Presidential Advisor, Hon Yaw Osafo-Maafo has been recorded on camera saying that the decision of the government to go to the IMF is rather to sustain the Free SHS and not to abolish it. Speaking at the USAID conference, Hon. Yaw Osafo-Maafo said that IMF will not touch the Free SHS because they believe in education.

This is what he said, “If there any sector that we should not touch, that sector is education. This is because we are efficiently preparing the potential of youths. If you touch education, you are undermining your development. The decision of the government to go into the IMF is to avoid the possible withdrawal of the Free SHS policy. Some people are saying that the IMF will abolish Free SHS is going to them. This is not true. The IMF believes in education, so how can they abolish Free SHS?”.
