With Hearts the only team left in Africa, Ghanaians were expecting some great play from the Phobians especially as the team boasts of having many players in the local Black Stars. Hearts went into the game after suffering a number of losses as well as parting ways with coach Samuel Boadu. Hearts went down in the early minutes of the game and were lucky to end the first half with only a goal against them.
The second half returned with Hearts trying to string some passes and pull back a goal but this didn’t materialize as the home supporters cheered on their team. Hearts were unlucky again as they conceded another goal in the 75th minute. The Phobian boys hanged on and left the pitch with 3 goals against them. The team will have to pull some magic in Accra when the Malians return for the second leg.
Many supporters though are shocked at this shambolic performance of the team. After the abysmal performance in Africa last year, some say they thought the team will do better. In a number of comments on a post made by Juliet Bawuah, many comments suggested that Hearts were disgracing Ghana on the international scene.
However, is this a question of Hearts or Ghana football in general. For some time, teams in Ghana have been abysmal in continental football. This caused CAF to reduce Ghana’s slots in Africa. This hasn’t however stirred clubs in Ghana to perform. If Hearts fail to win by 4 clear goals in the second leg all of Ghana’s representatives in Africa would have been eliminated.
